Don\u00b4t you want to restore it to mint condition? The rear part is ready to go, I removed the gear box a few months ago already. But Mark needs the front part as well, so I have to remove the front axle. But before disassembling the front axle I had to remove the steering box. The box itself lost contact to the chassis leg a long time ago and was wiggling freely, just hold by the central draglink.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-302\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG00419-20170921-1609-e1506065556198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-303\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG00421-20170921-1612-e1512934753811.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Have a look on the draglink, it\u00b4s still the original one with the grease nipple and the simple, non-closed rubber boot.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Steering boxes for split window busses are hard to find, so I am happy that there is still a steering box even it is looking very rusty and dirty. Will it be worth restoring? This will depend not on the condition of the box only! Before investing time, work and money into it, I have to be sure that it is the original steering box of the Samba. Because \u2013you guess it already- there are THREE different steering boxes just for Barndoor! So let\u00b4s drop it in cleaning fluid for a night.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-304\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG00422-20170921-1620-e1506065394478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I am removed the oily, but now more or less liquid dirt from the box and was lucky to find this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSCF4854-e1512934732503.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Bingo! Model 532! But is it the &#8220;new type&#8221; or the &#8220;old type&#8221;?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What is the diffenernce between &#8220;532 old&#8221; and &#8220;532 new&#8221; type? The ZF-number is the same. Next step is getting the seals we need for the restoration of the box. Let\u00b4s have a look into the 1951 spare parts book:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-453\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Lenkgetriebe-M\u00e4rz-51er-Katalog-e1510743463133.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"870\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are three sealings we need:<\/p>\n<p>N 013 828&nbsp;&nbsp; seal ring for the upper laying shaft<\/p>\n<p>N 013 809&nbsp;&nbsp; seal ring for the two lower housing screws<\/p>\n<p>N 013 840&nbsp;&nbsp; upper seal ring in steering box for spindel of the boxes ZF 531 (up to chassis # 20 &#8211; 010 000) and ZF 532 old type (from chassis 20 &#8211; 010 000 until 20 &#8211; 041 712)<\/p>\n<p>To produce this seals in VEWIB-quality is my job! It wasn\u00b4t to complicated and the seals are already in stock now. If you need them for your Barndoor restoration, you can order them through every VEWIB-distributor.<\/p>\n<p>Next week I will remove the front axle and send the two parts of the chassis to Mark.
