I was always wondering what the meaning of the term \u201cBarndoor-Mafia\u201d might be. I guess now I know. It must be this scary society here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Foto-015-1024x746.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1660\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Sure the Barndoor-Mafia drives nothing less than a early \u00b450 Microbus. Did you expect anything else?<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would never call any dealer selling super-rare Barndoor parts a member of a Mafia. These bits are extremely hard to find and nobody is forced to buy this parts for an extraordinary price from a professional dealer. In fact nobody is REALLY in the need to buy these parts at all. Life will go on without them and you won\u00b4t starve if you don\u00b4t buy. Let\u00b4s face it, it\u00b4s just a pure luxury item! And there is still an alternative if you feel you really, really want this damned little taillight and don\u00b4t have the money to buy it right away at this shop for rare VW-parts: you just need to go to every little swap meet in Europe for the next 30 years \u00a0\u00a0-you will find it someday for small bugs, it\u00b4s just a matter of time. And luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway in Spa August 2017 I felt I don\u00b4t have so much time, so I spend a lot of money for this taillight here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSCF4371-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I posted my find right away proudly in the blog here, but Florian George replied that this taillight is wrong for 1951. He was right and I was too exited when I checked out the taillight in Spa, so I spend a lot of money for a rare part that is still not correct for my Samba. Now I know this taillight is correct for 1953 \u2013 1955, but the earlier Busses had a flat red lens without any marking or logo while the chrome housing is the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make it even more complicated the flat lens existed in plastic and in real glass. I don\u00b4t know yet for sure the exact application of glass and plastic, but I will find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSCF4372-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then I tried to find the correct taillight, but to avoid the next expensive, but wrong purchase I collected information about it first. There are some pictures of \u00b450\/\u00b451 taillights in the net, but none of them are very exact. Anyway I didn\u00b4t see any taillights even close to this pictures, none in the swapmeets and even none at the professional dealers. Seems these little bastards are really hard to find!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But last week I found some a collection of strange Hella taillights, sure not VW taillights, but at least the lens looks to me at least similar to the \u00b450\/\u00b451 lenses I checked in the net. Just have a look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"990\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190110_144355-e1547205574165-1024x990.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1663\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>This baby was for sale pretty cheap, so I went for the risk that the lens might be wrong again<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"834\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190110_144507-e1547203775765-1024x834.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1665\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>I thought: &#8220;OK, they are definetely old Hella and the size of the lens seems to be correct&#8230;.<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190110_144403-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1664\"\/><figcaption><em><strong>These units I found far away from any VW-related area, so they were not expensive at all<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After disassembling the first of the four (yes, I found four of them!) units I could compare them to the \u00b452 &#8211; \u00b455 lens. At least it is the same size. Have a look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190110_144658-e1547203726896-1024x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1666\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is even a small gasket around the lens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.entfallteiledienst.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190110_144715-e1547203659557-1024x487.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1667\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here is my call for the experts: did I find the correct lens for my \u00b451? Or are these four glass (not plastic) lenses wrong again for \u00b451? Are they for Busses earlier than mine maybe? If so is it just the material that\u00b4s different? This would be OK as I could use the glass one to manufacture a plastic repro. That\u00b4s not such a big deal, the opposite way would be much more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please feel free to leave a comment and share your knowledge with us.
